About this Event
Majun, or Herbal Electuary for respiratory health
(Please note: the range of ticket prices is designed to encourage you to buy the tier that you can best afford - i.e. if you are able to comfortably pay at the higher rate, please do so that those with less financial resource can access this activity at the lower rate. 🙏🏾)
In December as we get deeper into winter, we will learn about and prepare together a medicine that is rooted in centuries-old knowledge and practice and compounded by combining powdered herbs and honey.
Majoon or Majun is a semisolid paste preparation used in Unani Tibb, a traditional medical system widely practiced today in India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, central Asia and beyond, that has origins in intercultural exchange between medieval Arabic healing cultures and even older Greek medicine traditions. 'Unani Tibb' means 'Greek Medicine' in Arabic.
The name Majun comes from the Arabic word Jama, meaning "to combine" or "kneaded" - it is made so that strong or bitter-tasting herbs can be more easily and pleasantly taken, as well as the honey acting as carrier/extraction medium and preservative.
Rasheeqa, one of the herbalists of Community Apothecary, has a direct connection with Unani medicine through her father's family who have been practicing it since the early 1900s, and has been tasting different formulations of Majun since childhood at the family 'dawakhana' or medicine house, in Moradabad, northern India. She can vouch that it is delicious and potent. So we thought that it would be exciting to practice making it ourselves (with invited guidance from her family!)
We will make the medicine with herbs from our gardens, aiming for a lung/cough remedy for the winter season - appropriate with honey. We hope you'll join us in this sacred adventure!

For greater equity of access to this herbal healthcare practice, we offer our fortnightly workshop sessions at the Hornbeam on a sliding scale, meaning different price tickets to enable participation at different financial capacities. If you are comfortably able to pay at the higher price levels, this supports others with less money to be able to pay the lower price levels. Some info & guidance here about this model
If you are not able to pay any of the rates, or the lower cost tickets have sold out and you want to come but can't pay the higher cost ones, please get in touch with us as no-one is turned away for lack of funds. The Hornbeam venue does have a capacity limit so this will be a factor in how many extra people we can fit - as it can also feel quite crowded with more than 18-20 people!
