About this Event
How can research and lived experience help us design spaces that better support family life, community and connection?
Join TiggColl for a lunchtime talk exploring how research, storytelling and human behaviour can inform the design of meaningful spaces.
The talk takes its starting point from It Takes a Village, a thesis by TiggColl student Charisse Kwong, developed through UCL’s MSc programme. The research explores the evolving role of community and shared childcare in a post-pandemic world, examining the experiences of working parents and the networks of support that surround family life.
How can these insights move from research into design?
TiggColl is currently exploring related questions through its work designing family social clubs — spaces that bring families together and seek to create new opportunities for shared experiences, support and social interaction.
Drawing on work-in-progress projects alongside examples of narrative-led design, Manuel Gonzalez Nogueira will explore how research, context and real-life experiences can become part of the design process: informing the stories designers tell about a place, the concepts they develop and ultimately the spaces they create.
The talk will consider how a narrative-led approach can help designers look beyond programme and function to understand how people might experience, inhabit and connect through a space.
Expect a visually led discussion moving from academic research to live projects, and exploring how listening closely to the ways people live can lead to more thoughtful and socially connected places.
