About this Event
The Lower Limb Image interpretation and preliminary clinical evaluation study day is primarily aimed at registered radiographers working and evaluating images in the acute hospital setting, although its suitable for other registered healthcare professional who encounter and interpret x-ray images as part of their scope of practice.
Abnormality detection systems in radiography such as the red dot scheme have existed in the UK since the 1980s to aid patient triage. Provision of a preliminary clinical evaluation (PCE) is now recommended where radiographers provide a brief description of imaging findings to the referrer when an immediate definitive report is unavailable (SoR, 2024).
Embracing current developments in preliminary clinical evaluation (PCE) this Lower Limb X-Ray Image Interpretation and preliminary clinical evaluation study event has been designed to equip practitioners with the skills and confidence to provide initial interpretation of radiographs of the upper limb to develop knowledge and skills in pattern recognition and image interpretation in support of patient management. Participants will develop an understanding of the importance of making first line interpretation of images in support of patient management to reduce error rates, leading to a reduction in mismanagement and patient recalls.
The study day will comprise of 3 lectures in the morning which provide a systematic approach to image interpretation, terminology, relevant anatomy, pathology and imaging appearances and diagnostic quality.
In the afternoon participants will rotate through 3 image-based workshops where the theoretical knowledge taught in the morning can be applied in practice in smaller groups using a blended approach to teaching incorporating collaborative discussion.
All image interpretation sessions and lectures will be delivered by clinical reporting radiographers from the South West.
The event is CPD Now endorsed bt the Society of Radiographers, and may help to suppory outcomes including; practical skills, knowledge base, working safely, legal/ethical frameworks or guidance, communication skills, high-quality healthcare/education services, inter-professional/agency working or learning and evidence to support practice of CPD Now.

Registration and Refreshments
🕑: 09:20 AM - 09:45 AM
Welcome and Introduction to PCE
Host: Louise Hancock
Info: Understand the different between red dot and preliminary clinical evaluation (PCE) systems and the role Radiographer play in PCE.
Summarise the core components of the Society of Radiographers' (SoR) guidance on preliminary clinical evaluation, including clinical decision-making, patient safety, and professional responsibilities.
🕑: 09:45 AM - 10:35 AM
Satisfaction of search - Lower Limb
Info: To learn, develop and understand the theoretical principles behind satisfaction of search when interpreting x-ray images and its significance within a clinical setting. Image review of some common satisfaction of search examples related to foot, ankle, knee and distal femur, and understand the significance of their findings.
🕑: 10:35 AM - 11:20 AM
Terminology and language
Info: Review of common reporting terms and radiological descriptive terms and understand the context and significance of their findings. Recognise the positive impact of accurate terminology on patient care and management.
🕑: 11:20 AM - 11:40 AM
Break
🕑: 11:40 AM - 12:25 PM
Diagnostic Quality & Image Interpretation - Lower Limb
Info: To develop knowledge and skills in the importance of producing images of high diagnostic quality contributing to the effective development of Preliminary Clinical Evaluation (PCE) and report writing in support of patient management in relation to the lower limb.
Explore the implications of artefacts on image quality and interpretation, as well as dose implications.

Break out session 1 - Image based workshops
Info: Participants will rotate through each topic over the course of three sessions.
Foot-
This is an interactive session using image review and collaborative learning to discuss image quality, pathologies and subsequent imaging of the foot.
Ankle -
Interactive participation using image reporting workstations in pairs, to review X-ray images of the ankle applying satisfaction of search to compose a written Preliminary Clinical Evaluation (PCE). Participants will be able to self-audit their written Preliminary Clinical Evaluation to that of a formal report, to assess and correct their findings and facilitate self-reflection. This session will adopt more of an OSCE (test of competence) format.
Knee and Distal Femur -
This is an interactive session using image review and collaborative learning to discuss image quality, pathologies and subsequent imaging of the knee and distal femur.
