A musical journey through the sounds, traditions and contemporary voice of LithuaniaWhat does Lithuania sound like?
Landscapes of Lithuania invites you to discover the country through music – through the human voice, piano, and two distinctive traditional Lithuanian instruments: kanklės, a traditional plucked string instrument, and birbynė, a unique Lithuanian woodwind instrument.
Four outstanding Lithuanian musicians – soprano Dovilė Kazonaitė, kanklės player Aistė Bružaitė, birbynė player Egidijus Ališauskas, and pianist Milda Umbrusevičiūtė – come together in a programme that brings Lithuania’s musical heritage into a contemporary concert setting.
At the heart of the programme is music by Lithuanian composers, with a special focus on the works of Algirdas Martinaitis, one of Lithuania’s most distinctive contemporary composers and a recipient of the Lithuanian National Prize for Culture and Arts. His music has been specially arranged for this unique combination of voice, kanklės, birbynė and piano, revealing new colours and unexpected musical connections.
The programme also reflects the cultural significance of 2026, the Year of Kanklės and Marcelijus Martinaitis in Lithuania. The poetic world of Marcelijus Martinaitis – one of Lithuania’s most important poets – meets the music of Lithuanian composers, creating a dialogue between memory, nature, poetry and the present day.
Rather than presenting tradition as something fixed in the past, Landscapes of Lithuania explores it as something alive – something that can be reimagined, transformed and heard in new ways.
Come and discover Lithuania not only through its stories, but through its sound.
Landscapes of Lithuania is a concert about nature, people, poetry, memory and the ever-changing musical identity of a country.
