AI for Everyone, Everything, All the Time?
By: Dr. Sam Jay
While AI is an exceptional tool for augmenting human capability and accelerating work, deploying it well demands more than technical competency. It requires the core human capacities in critical thinking, judgment and discernment, relational communication, and domain expertise that remain valuable precisely because they transcend any particular technology.
Knowing when to use AI is as important as knowing how to use it. This means understanding three distinct scenarios: 1) when AI should replace human effort because it is accurate and efficient enough for the task, 2) when AI and human judgment should work in partnership with humans steering and refining outputs, and 3) when human expertise should evaluate or override AI recommendations because the stakes demand accountability no system can provide.
Dr. Samuel M. Jay, leads institutional strategy in AI and online learning at MSU Denver. He is a professor and holds a faculty appointment in Communication Studies with a specialization in Rhetoric and Public Culture.
