🧠 Lecture: "The Con Artist’s Guide to Ancient Art"
🎤 Speaker: Professor Erin L. Thompson
Match your wits with some of history’s most successful antiquities forgers in this eye-opening talk with art crime expert Professor Erin L. Thompson. Based on her research into the dark side of the market for historical treasures, you’ll learn how master forgers choose materials to beat scientific tests, invent convincing backstories, and identify the perfect buyer (hint: it might be someone a lot like you).
Once you’ve imagined your perfect con, Professor Thompson will reveal the real cost of forgery: the damage done to our understanding of the ancient world by today’s nearly unchecked market for fake antiquities. She’ll also share insights from her forthcoming book, The Styrofoam Mummy: Adventures on the Dark Side of the Market for Ancient Treasure, from Norton.
America’s only art crime professor, Erin holds both a J.D. and a Ph.D. in art history from Columbia University and teaches at the City University of New York.
