? Lecture: "Fungi: The Good, the Bad, and the Tasty"
? Speaker: Dr. Chris Cornelison
What do bread, wine, antibiotics, and a parasite that turns ants into zombies have in common? Fungi—an entire kingdom of life hiding in plain sight, with millions of species and almost none of the attention they deserve.
In this fascinating talk, Dr. Chris Cornelison will crack open the strange, sprawling world of fungi: from the microscopic molds manufacturing everyday ingredients and medicines, to vast underground networks sometimes called the "Wood Wide Web." You’ll hear how a single fungus can stretch across thousands of acres, how a mold accidentally saved millions of lives, and how Cordyceps turns unsuspecting ants into real-life zombies.
Dr. Cornelison, Assistant Vice President of Innovation & Strategic Partnerships and Associate Professor of Microbiology at Kennesaw State University, is also Co-Founder of mushroom-cultivation company MycoLogic Inc. Trained as an applied and environmental microbiologist, he has spent two decades studying destructive fungal diseases in bats and transforming lab discoveries into real-world solutions.
From the food on your plate to the future of medicine, plastics, and sustainable materials, fungi are quietly reshaping our world.
