A One-Man Show Performed by Josh Berkowitz
Part baseball memoir, part psychological excavation, part theatrical free-for-all, HEY BATTER, SWING BADDER! takes America’s pastime as the starting point for a wildly associative investigation into boyhood, masculinity, competition, memory, and a queer identity swallowed up by the rituals of American sports culture.
Combining stream-of-consciousness writing, contemporary dance, clown, psychodrama, and an interactive large-scale installation, Josh Berkowitz moves between the baseball diamond and the increasingly unpredictable territory of personal history.
Little League memories collide with the technical intricacies of the game. Athletic instruction becomes choreography. Childhood embarrassments resurface with alarming clarity. The rules of baseball begin to resemble the unwritten codes of human behavior.
Moving between absurdity and vulnerability, athleticism and awkwardness, HEY BATTER, SWING BADDER! explores what it means to perform, compete, belong, and occasionally make a complete fool of yourself.
