Joanna Mattrey is a violist and composer working in improvisation, new music, and classical music. Her playing challenges the conventions of the viola. As an educator, Mattrey leads Improv Club, an open monthly improvisation workshop at Kirkos Space, Dublin, and has taught improvisation classes and seminars at The New School (USA), DCU (IRE), Conserere Collectivo (IT), Creative Music Studios (USA), and Pacific Conservatory (USA).
She is a current Crash Ensemble Creator, premiering a new work at New Music Dublin 2027. As a current Arts Council Bursary 2026 recipient, Mattrey is composing a new modern work for experimental string quartet titled 'Lilt of the Mother's Tongue.' Notable festivals performances include Berlin Jazz Fest, Newport Jazz Fest, NYC Jazz Fest, Monheim Trienniale, Huddersfield CMF, ArtActs, and more. She performs regularly with the Irish National Opera and Crash Ensemble.
