What is reality? Is it what we see, what we remember, or just what we've decided to believe?Inception isn't really about the special effects or the spinning top at the end. Underneath all the dream layers and heists, it's asking something that's bothered people for a very long time: how much of what we believe did we actually arrive at ourselves — and how much was put there?
That's the unsettling part. Ideas can be planted. The way we see things can be nudged, reshaped, rebuilt from the inside. And once an idea settles in, it doesn't feel planted anymore — it feels like it was always yours. That's what makes the film stick with people long after the plot details fade.
Debate works the same way, if you think about it.
Every argument starts as just an idea floating around, waiting for someone to give it shape. A motion means nothing until a speaker decides what it means. A good speech can take something an audience was sure of and quietly take it apart. A rebuttal can flip the way a room is looking at the exact same facts. And every so often, winning isn't about proving your opponent wrong — it's about getting them to second-guess what they thought they already knew.
This year, Josephite Debating Club is organizing JDC Nationals & Discoursia 2026, built around one of the most mind-bending worlds, cinema has ever given us — the layered, uncertain reality of Inception.
There's no courtroom here, no galaxy far away. The arena is just the mind.
Debaters will move through layer after layer of argument, each motion asking them to build a version of reality, defend it, then watch someone else try to tear it down. Every speech plants something. Every rebuttal tries to dig it back out. Every point of information is a small crack in the other side's foundation. And every round comes back to the same question: can you actually make them believe you?
But there's a more serious layer underneath all of this. We're living through a moment where reality itself feels contested — competing narratives, political noise, shifting values, technology moving faster than our ability to make sense of it. Telling the difference between genuine conviction and manipulation isn't just a debate skill anymore. It's a survival skill.
Like the film, debating asks for more than being smart. It asks for precision, creativity, awareness — and the willingness to question things you'd otherwise take for granted.
One layer tests what you know.
Another tests how you think.
Another tests how you move.
And at the very bottom is the thing every good debater is actually chasing: turning an idea into something someone else can't shake. Because in the end, the most powerful weapon was never a gun, an army, or an empire. It was always just an idea.
