Japan Guitar Shop have spent the last seven years building one of the most substantial bodies of original music to come out of Phnom Penh’s independent music scene. Formed by a few basketball teammates in 2019, they took their name from the small TTP thrift shop and upstairs rehearsal room where they first played music together. The band's debut album, Done You Right, was recorded over the course of a year at 60 Road Studios in Siem Reap and released in 2024 to widespread acclaim. (Reviews and links to it can be found below).Japan Guitar Shop have extensively toured Cambodia, Vietnam, Thailand, and headlined festivals such as Zandari Festa in Seoul, South Korea, Shambala Festival in Chiang Dao, Thailand, and Canopy Festival in Phnom Penh. They've played packed shows supporting Dengue Fever, Skeleton Goode, and Carnival Youth, the remarkable Latvian band they brought to Cambodia after encountering them on the international festival circuit.
Earlier this year, Done You Right was pressed to vinyl through Pearl of Asia Records. Meanwhile, the band has been busy in the studio recording and mixing an upcoming album.
Opening will be Wayfarer State, the incredible American blues and folk troubadour who found fame in Busan, South Korea and infamy elsewhere, having played extensively from New Orleans, Louisiana to Beijing, China. (Links to Wayfarer State music below as well).
