Jane’s Walk: Migration, Memory & Belonging at Mount Pleasant Cemetery
Join us for an in-person Jane’s Walk at Mount Pleasant Cemetery, presented in the context of Mount Pleasant Group’s 200th anniversary.
Using the cemetery as a lens into Toronto’s past, present and future, we’ll explore the people, communities and landscapes that have shaped the city across generations.
Together, we’ll look at migration, belonging, architecture, landscape design and changing cultural practices around death, remembrance and care. Through stories, public art, monuments and the cemetery itself, we’ll consider what these histories reveal about Toronto’s evolution.
We’ll also share a behind-the-scenes look at our work helping Mount Pleasant Group commemorate its bicentennial, including the archival research, stories and historical materials that informed the project. We’ll talk about what we uncovered in the archives, how we approached nearly two centuries of organizational and city history, and how that research was translated into public installations and experiences across the cemetery.
The walk is also an opportunity to look forward. What role do cemeteries play in our cities today? How might they continue to serve as places of memory, public history, grief, nature, connection and civic life? And what can looking back teach us about how we care for people, stories and places into the future?
This is a relaxed, conversational walk for anyone curious about Toronto’s history, community, memory and the evolving role of cemeteries.
Free and open to everyone. Spaces are limited.
Come walk, listen, share and see Mount Pleasant Cemetery, and the city around it, a little differently.
