Intro to Canister Damascus - Brooklyn

This immersive 6-hour workshop introduces students to the art of canister Damascus steel.
About this Event

Canister Damascus is a distinctive form of pattern-welded steel created by forging a mixture of powdered steel and solid metal pieces inside a sealed steel container, or "canister." Under intense heat and pressure, these materials fuse into a single solid billet. Once the canister is removed, the billet reveals unique, often unpredictable patterns that make every piece one of a kind.

In this hands-on class, students will design and assemble a canister billet, forge-weld it, and draw it out using our induction forge in Brooklyn. The course covers safety, material selection, canister preparation, forge welding, and basic forging techniques. By the end of the class, each student will leave with a forged Damascus billet ready for further refinement.

Students are encouraged to bring clean steel items to include in their billets, such as springs or ball bearings. Materials must be free of grease, oil, paint, and other contaminants. Contact us if you have questions about suitable materials.
