.About this Event
All are welcome for this event organised by the Research Network of Critical Social Science of Pharmaceuticals, Global Health, and STS (PharmaGHaSTS) and co-sponsored by the Reproduction Research Group of the Department of Global Health and Social Medicine and the Centre of Medical Law & Ethics at King’s College London.
The event will feature a pair of presentations on two vital access-to-medicines topics that are too rarely brought into conversation: for abortion, and for HIV.
Lucía Berro Pizzarossa from Women Help Women, based in Birmingham, will share the work she has been doing with community abortion providers and pharmaceutical manufacturers to develop alternative dosage forms, delivery mechanisms, and packaging for abortion pills—innovations designed to make these essential medicines more accessible, eco-friendly, and discreet for the people that they serve.
Susana van der Ploeg from Associação Brasileira Interdisciplinar de AIDS, based in Rio de Janeiro, will share work that they have been doing including to demand access to new medicines that are administered just twice-yearly and offer transformative potential to prevent and treat HIV/AIDS.
In a discussion chaired by Anne Pollock from the Department of Global Health and Social Medicine at King’s, these invited guests will reflect on points of intersection, both past and future. For example, Brazilian feminist and queer activists have played foundational roles in both the development and distribution of Medic*tion abortion, and in the right to HIV medicines as part of a right to health. Today, each of these movements is facing a challenging moment in the struggle for access to medicines, especially for the communities they serve, and are responding by creating radical and innovative interventions.
Their insights are invaluable to inform how we might work in new ways to transform dominant pharma models to better meet public health needs. This will be followed by discussion with the audience.
