International Symposium marks the 50th anniversary of Malraux’s death, providing a timely forum to re-evaluate his work.
About this Event

The internationally acclaimed novelist, French Resistance fighter, art theorist and the first minister of cultural affairs in the Charles De Gaulle government, André Malraux (1901-1976) remains a uniquely influential cultural figure today. This one-day International Symposium marks the 50th anniversary of Malraux’s death, providing a timely forum in which to re-evaluate the multifarious strands of his life and work, which encompass novels, philosophical writings, theories on art and political interventions.

The committee is inviting proposals (300 words, in English) for papers that address, but are not confined to, one or more of the following key aspects of Malraux’s opus and legacy: fraternity, freedom, death and transformation.

29th April 2026

Date: 19 June 2026, 9.30am-6pm

Venue: Birkbeck, University of London, Malet Street (Room TBC), WC1E 7HX

Keynote Presentation: Dr. Derek Allan, Australian National University

Format: Hybrid – in person (preferrable) and online.

Free attendance.

In addition, there will be the opportunity to publish the Symposium proceedings.

André Malraux (1901-1976), romancier de renommée internationale, résistant, théoricien de l'art et Premier ministre de la Culture du gouvernement de Charles de Gaulle, demeure aujourd'hui une figure culturelle d'une influence exceptionnelle. Ce colloque international d'une journée marque le 50e anniversaire de sa disparition et offre une tribune idéale pour réévaluer la richesse de son œuvre et de sa vie, qui englobe romans, écrits philosophiques, théories de l'art et engagements politiques. Le comité invite à soumettre des propositions de communications (300 mots maximum, en anglais ou en français) abordant, sans toutefois s'y limiter, un ou plusieurs des thèmes clés suivants, essentiels à l'œuvre et à l'héritage de Malraux : fraternité, liberté, mort et transformation. Conférence inaugurale : Dr Derek Allan, Université nationale australienne. Les actes du colloque auront la possibilité d'être publiés par Vernon Press. Date limite de soumission des proposition: 29 avril 2026
