International Dorothy Dunnet Day - 14th November 2026 (Edinburgh Group)Calling all Dunnetteers in the Edinburgh and surrounding area! This year is the 500th Anniversary of Lymond‘s Birth!
1526 was certainly a momentous year in European history. On 29th August, the Kingdom of Hungary completely collapsed under the onslaught of the Ottoman Empire, at the devastating Battle of Mohács.
Back in Scotland that year, Sir Walter Scott of Branxholme and Buccleuch earned the lasting enmity of the Kerr and Douglas families, after a failed attempt to rescue the teenaged King James V from the clutches of the powerful Earl of Angus.
But for Dorothy Dunnett fans, perhaps the most exciting event that happened in November 1526 was the fictional birth of Francis Crawford of Lymond.
To celebrate this 500th anniversary, you are cordially invited to commemorate Dorothy Dunnett, her brilliant writing and especially her larger-than-life character, Francis Crawford of Lymond, on Saturday 14th November at 12 noon at her flagstone in Makar‘s Court, next to the Writers’ Museum in Lady Stair‘s Close, Edinburgh, EH1 2NT.
There will be a short quotation or two and then we will scatter flowers on her stone. After a group photo for the record, you are invited to lunch at 12.30pm at Le Bistrot, situated on the corner of George IV Bridge and the Royal Mile.
You can see the lunch menu here https://lebistrot.co.uk/menus/lunch/
I will be sending out emails to those who have been before but you can already indicate your interest in joining us by sending an email to [email protected]. Please state your lunch menu choices, as the restaurant needs this information in advance. There is a limit of 22 places so avoid disappointment by booking your place now!
We very much look forward to seeing you there!
