About this Event
Archives are not neutral repositories of the past; they are shaped by power, omission, and the politics of memory.
Artists bring speculative, embodied, and affective methods that can disrupt the conventions of historical storytelling, highlight what is missing or suppressed, and offer counter-narratives that make space for other voices and ways of knowing and sharing.
It focuses specifically on how artists work in archival institutions through residences, grants and commissions and how such opportunities impact both creative practices and host institutions.
The discussion will foreground feminist and anti-colonial approaches, asking how creative practice can question the authority of archival records, draw attention to their silences and absences, and open possibilities for imagining histories otherwise.
A collaboration between and Infinity of Traces is a research project led by Diana Baker Smith (UNSW), Erin Brannigan (UNSW), and Jacqui Shelton (La Trobe University). This event is presented in partnership with the State Library of NSW.
