Join us for an afternoon and evening celebrating Cherokee storytelling, language, and film.
The Cherokee Film Fest opens with Mothertown, a film about the return of the original Cherokee settlement site at the Kituwah mound. From there, we welcome two Cherokee filmmakers to share their work and their stories.
Anthony Sneed (Eastern Band Cherokee, EBCI) is an award winning filmmaker based between Brooklyn, NY and Cherokee, NC. He will share several of his shorts, including SWIPE, The Stripper, and The Great Cherokee Grandmother, and speak about his upcoming feature documentary, Bastards of the Boundary: Indian Stickball.
Schon Duncan (United Keetoowah Band of Cherokee) is a Cherokee language teacher who will share his first film, ᏓᏗᏬᏂᏏ (We Will Speak), a feature length documentary about the fight to save the Cherokee language from extinction, along with his more recent short film, Ahyoka.
There will be time for dialogue with both filmmakers, an Indigenous meal shared together, and a special performance by singer Austin Markham, singing in the Cherokee language.
This is a chance to sit with Cherokee stories, told by Cherokee storytellers, in community.
