In the aftermath of the Civil War, Shuford's Sanctuary in Catawba County, North Carolina, serves as a safe haven and passageway for a diverse community searching for safety and a new beginning. But the sanctuary is thrown into terror when the landowner's youngest son is killed and a mysterious, feral beast appears to be responsible.
Desperate for answers, the community turns to renowned hunter Mansa Wendell, who is hired to track down the creature. What begins as a hunt soon becomes something far more sinister as Wendell encounters a nameless evil and a fate potentially worse than death.

Decades later, the mystery lives on through Uncle Wendell, an elderly man carrying both a secret and a responsibility that must eventually be passed to someone else. His nephew Ronald, concerned that his uncle may be experiencing the early stages of dementia, begins investigating the family's history with the help of Professor Garrett, a renowned expert whose research draws him into the Wendell family's long-running battle with evil. Ronald's cousin Ray, meanwhile, is far more skeptical of Uncle Wendell's incredible stories and the family's long-held secret.
