I Like It Like That! – Vinyl, Dance and Live Latin Grooves brings together Trópico Norte, Salseo, and Midnight Boogaloo for a journey through Latin and Afro-Caribbean music. From treasured sounds preserved on vinyl to the collective joy of the dance floor and the infectious energy of a live band, the evening invites you to listen, learn, move, and connect!
The night begins with Metiendo Mano, a vinyl listening and dance gathering presented by Trópico Norte. Vinyl selectors Ana Rivera (Mexico), Diana Puentes (Colombia), and Tom Howard (Canada) will share sounds from all across Latin America and the Caribbean. Moving through salsa, cumbia, boogaloo, and other Caribbean-rooted rhythms, the gathering approaches vinyl as more than a format: these records are portable archives carrying histories of migration, cultural exchange, resistance, and celebration. Audiences are invited not only to listen, but also to move, participate, and discover.
The music then moves from the turntables to the dance floor as Salseo leads a welcoming cumbia class for all levels. Born from a desire to create queer-centred spaces in Vancouver for Afro-Latinx social dancing, Salseo is a queer Latinx-led collective dedicated to building connection and joy through culturally rooted and accessible dance experiences. No partner or previous dance experience is necessary. Just come ready to move!
Midnight Boogaloo then takes the stage with an infectious blend of cumbia, salsa, boogaloo, and Latin jazz. Led by Colombian guitarist Alan Ruiz, the Vancouver-based collective draws inspiration from the vibrant New York Latin music scene of the 1960s and 1970s while reflecting the diversity of Vancouver’s contemporary music community.
After the concert, Trópico Norte’s selectors return to keep the records spinning and the dance floor moving.
Enjoy drinks and delicious Latin American bites from Colombian Antojitos, available for purchase throughout the event.
I Like It Like That! is where music, movement, and community come alive. Join us for a night filled with rhythm, joy, and connection!
About the Artists
Midnight Boogaloo is a Vancouver-based Latin fusion collective led by Colombian guitarist Alan Ruiz. Blending cumbia, salsa, boogaloo, and Latin jazz, the band draws inspiration from the New York Latin music movement of the 1970s. Their energetic performances celebrate the richness of Latin American rhythms, creating an experience that moves both body and soul.
Salseo is a queer Latinx-led collective born in February 2024, created in response to the lack of queer-centred spaces in Vancouver to learn and practice Afro-Latinx social dancing. Inspired by the salsa and cumbia communities in Mexico and the open-to-all spirit of cumbia street dancing, Salseo was created. They aim to build connection and joy through Afro-Latinx dance and community. They offer welcoming, culturally rooted, economically accessible spaces where everyone can dance freely, without judgment or financial barriers.
Trópico Norte is a Vancouver-based cultural initiative dedicated to researching, sharing, and celebrating Latin and Afro-Caribbean music through vinyl culture. The project brings together selectors, collectors, and cultural workers interested in understanding how tropical music travels and transforms within diasporic contexts.
