When videographer Aaron answers an online advert for a day’s work, he travels to a remote house to meet Josef, a man who says he wants to record a video for his unborn son. The request seems sincere and the money is welcome, but as Josef’s behaviour becomes increasingly unsettling, Aaron finds himself questioning exactly what he’s agreed to.
Directed by Patrick Brice and developed with co-star Mark Duplass, Creep finds its horror in something painfully familiar: knowing you should leave, but feeling too awkward to say so. Forced intimacy, inappropriate jokes and crossed boundaries make every encounter uncomfortable, with laughter offering little relief from the feeling that something is very wrong.
Brice’s 2014 debut puts the uneasy relationship between its two leads at the centre of everything. Duplass makes Josef seem vulnerable, ridiculous and threatening, sometimes within the same conversation, while Brice’s Aaron keeps giving him another chance. A camera, a secluded house and an increasingly uncomfortable day’s work are enough to make you reconsider ever doing a stranger a favour.
