About this Event
As part of the Hungarian Emerging Artists Concert Series on October 22, 2026, celebrating Ferenc Liszt’s birthday, the Liszt Institute New York welcomes Hungarian pianist Csanád Barbarics for a special recital dedicated entirely to the music of the legendary composer whose name our Institute proudly carries.
The evening will take audiences on a journey through the deeply spiritual, poetic, dramatic, and virtuosic worlds of Liszt’s music. The program features selections from Harmonies poétiques et religieuses, including Pater Noster and Ave Maria (Glocken von Rom), followed by the monumental Après une lecture du Dante: Fantasia quasi Sonata from Années de Pèlerinage II. The recital culminates in one of the towering masterpieces of the Romantic piano repertoire, Liszt’s Piano Sonata in B minor, S. 178.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
The evening’s featured artist, Csanád Barbarics, represents a new generation of Hungarian pianists carrying this tradition forward. He began playing the piano at just three and a half years old and went on to study with distinguished musicians including János Balázs at the Snétberger Music Talent Centre and later at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest. After earning his Master’s degree from the Krzysztof Penderecki Academy of Music in Kraków in 2024, he is currently pursuing a second Master’s degree at East Tennessee State University.
Barbarics has already received recognition at numerous international competitions. Most recently, he won Third Prize at the 2026 Knoxville International Piano Festival & Competition; in 2025, he received an Honorary Mention at New York’s Ocean Music International Piano Competition and was named an Alternate Finalist at the Franz Liszt International Piano Competition.
His performances have taken him across Europe, Asia, and the United States, from Budapest, Vienna, Kraków, and Barcelona to Hanoi and the U.S. In 2025, he gave his first American solo recital in Johnson City, Tennessee, and also appeared at the American Liszt Society’s annual Liszt Festival, making this special New York Liszt celebration a particularly fitting continuation of his artistic journey.
