On Sunday, October 18th, The Mahoning Drive-in Theater in Lehighton, Pennsylvania invites you to come and see how the vampires do it, with a 35mm screening of HOUSE OF DARK SHADOWS (1970), the first feature film based on the legendary 1960’s horror TV series!DARK SHADOWS was an unlikely phenomenon, a daily soap opera featuring werewolves, ghosts, time travel, and a sympathetic vampire named Barnabas Collins who became a unlikely heartthrob. It spawned merchandise, comic books, bubblegum cards, hit records, and a pair of feature films released by MGM in the early 70s, while the show was still going strong. We present the first of those two films in celebration of the 60th anniversary of the debut of the series on ABC TV.
Jonathan Frid stars as Barnabus, the eldest member of the Collins family, accidentally freed after a century in his crypt by a grave robber, who seeks refuge and blood ties at his family estate, Collinwood. Unfortunately, his vampiric urges must be satisfied, even if it means introducing the occasional family member into his sanfuinary secret world.
An efficient gothic shocker, which holds its own against the Hammer vampire films of its day, HOUSE OF DARK SHADOWS is both a condensation of the Barnabas storyline from the series, while giving it its own big screen, bloody twists. Filmed at the historic Lyndhurst estate in Tarrytown, New York, with cast members pulling double duty while the series was still being filmed in New York City, the film stands as one of the great, if under-seen, vampire films of the 1970s.
