About this Event
What gives weight and meaning to our lives? How might gravity, dreams, memory, or happiness take shape on a page?
Enchanted Lion Books, in collaboration with SUR NYC, invites you to celebrate Gravity and Other Substances with Colombian artist and author Daniel Lievano.
The evening marks the official launch of this stunning book, in which Daniel turns his attention to the forces that shape our lives, bringing the physical and the intangible into visual conversation. Gravity, dreams, memory, and happiness become “substances” he explores through images, searching for new ways to consider them—and perhaps to understand them himself.
Visiting from Colombia, Daniel will share the process of creating the book: the sketches, thoughts, and possibilities he discovered in the language of the graphic novel. Through panels, sequences, rhythm, and abstraction, he’ll explore how images can carry thought and feeling, how meaning unfolds between them, and what shapes our feelings might take.
Following his presentation, Daniel will be joined in conversation by Claudia Bedrick, publisher of Enchanted Lion Books, and illustrator & art director Eugenia Mello, one of the book’s translators. Audience questions and a book signing will follow, with copies available to purchase.
We welcome artists, illustrators, authors, readers, and anyone curious about the ways books can expand our understanding of being human. Join us for an evening of close looking, conversation, and discovery, with light refreshments and canapés.
