Grandpa, is there anything you don’t know?
A prehistoric grandpa wakes up and begins to paint the story of humankind on the walls of his cave.
He pours the sea out of his sleeve. He casually slips a storm into his pocket. And when you ask him, “Grandpa, is there anything you don’t know?”, he answers without hesitation:
“How to die! Hahaha…”
Then he bursts into a devilish laugh, changes the drill bit in his power drill – and carries on.
THE AGE OF GRANDPA I. is a playful, visual and almost non-verbal theatre performance for audiences aged 5 and above. Armed with ordinary tools, everyday objects, sounds and an unlimited supply of imagination, our prehistoric Grandpa creates his own wonderfully eccentric version of the story of humankind.
Pliers, hammers, drills and other tools suddenly stop being what they seem. They transform into characters, landscapes, animals and unexpected theatrical images. Everyday objects acquire a new life, while seemingly ordinary tools become instruments of theatrical magic.
It is also a playful reminder of something we are gradually forgetting – the fascination of making things with our own hands and the almost magical world of tools that once surrounded our everyday lives.
In Grandpa’s world, almost anything is possible.
And if something happens to be impossible, he simply finds the right tool for the job.
THEATRE WITHOUT LANGUAGE BARRIERS
One of the distinctive qualities of THE AGE OF GRANDPA I. is its ability to communicate across languages, generations and cultures.
The performance relies primarily on physical theatre, visual storytelling, sound, rhythm, object manipulation and direct interaction with the audience. No knowledge of Slovak is required.
Children and adults can enter Grandpa’s strange and playful universe together, regardless of whether they speak Slovak, Greek, English – or none of these languages.
This universal theatrical language allows Dogma Theatre to bring contemporary Slovak independent theatre to international audiences without subtitles and without losing the humour, spontaneity and immediate connection between performer and spectator.
