Civilisations rise and fall. Throughout history, societies which have concentrated political power, influence and natural resources in the leadership of hierarchical systems have repeatedly proven vulnerable to collapse. Today, humanity faces unprecedented existential risks, including climate change and rapidly advancing technology in an increasingly interconnected global system. What democratic arrangements can ensure that societies remain adaptable, resilient and stable in tackling these challenges?
Drawing on his book Goliath’s Curse, Luke Kemp will examine the historical drivers of societal collapse, consider whether democratic institutions can prevent future catastrophes and explore the role of deliberative democracy in securing a sustainable future.
