English Version
Georgian Music Legacy Collection (GMLC) is proud to announce the record release and presentation of a definitive cornerstone of the Georgian underground: Selected Songs by Lado Burduli & Recepti. The event will take place on November 14, 2026, at Mutant Radio, Tbilisi. The record is already available for purchase at Vodkast Records and Retromania.
Tbilisi, 1987. The Soviet Union is cracking — not yet shattered, but visibly fractured. The cultural apparatus decides which music exists and which voices deserve to be heard: the Union of Composers controls the studios, the state dictates the stage. Anything carrying genuine anger, darkness, or dissent is not considered culture — it is seen as a problem. From their very first note, Recepti was a problem.
Lado Burduli stood apart from anyone else on the Georgian musical landscape of his era. Trained at the Paliashvili Central Music School, a graduate of the Sarajishvili State Conservatory, and a former double bassist with the Opera and Ballet Theatre, he arrived at rock music not out of ignorance of classical tradition, but through its conscious subversion. He mastered the rules completely, only to find them hollow. In an era that demanded conformity, crafting raw, fierce, Georgian-language punk in a home studio — devoid of institutional support or official prospects — was far more than an artistic choice; it was an act of open defiance.
Their sound sits at the crossroads of dark punk and cold wave, yet what grounds it distinctly in Tbilisi is Burduli’s voice and poetry. His lyrics never aestheticize struggle from a detached distance; they inhabit it completely. These are political tracks that avoid political rhetoric — they sound, above all, human. In the late 1980s, Recepti carved out a bold new direction for Georgian music: deeply rooted in native identity, turned toward the West, urgent and uncompromising. The sonic grit, gloom, and momentum that would conquer grunge and post-punk scenes abroad in the early '90s were already right here in Tbilisi — created without a label, a budget, or a blueprint.
