More than two decades in the making, a remarkable work by Austin composer Glover Gill is finally getting its world premiere!Unwound Sound brings Gill's Requiem to life in its first complete performance, a seven-movement work for chamber orchestra and chorus.
Originally composed in the early 2000s, the piece grew out of a single movement written for a Christmas album.
Encouraged by Austin's Barbwire Project, Gill expanded it into a complete Requiem Mass—but plans for a performance never came together. Now, more than twenty years later, the music will finally be heard in its entirety.
Moving between lush, lyrical passages, driving rhythms, and moments of quiet reflection, the Requiem brings a contemporary voice to a centuries-old musical tradition.
The performance features the instrumentalists and singers of Unwound Sound, joined by the First UU Adult Vocal Ensemble and the Tosca String Quartet, under the direction of Brent Baldwin.
Also on the program is Baldwin's Meditation in Sunlight, a tone poem inspired by the poetry of May Sarton, featuring electric guitar, chamber orchestra, and voices.
Presented by Unwound Sound and First Unitarian Universalist Church of Austin.
Admission is FREE and everyone is welcome! Freewill offerings will benefit the Central Texas Food Bank.
We hope you'll join us for this long-awaited musical occasion!
