About this Event

GEAR Multisport Triathlon

GEAR is a unique multisport race on Vancouver’s waterfront combining running, water biking and functional fitness.

Whether you’re coming to compete, challenge yourself, or try something completely different, GEAR is designed to be competitive while still being approachable and fun.

The Race

You’ll complete all three sections in this order:

3.8 km Run
Start the race with a 3.8 km run course around the Vanier Park area.

2.5 km Water Bike
After your run, you’ll transition onto a Go Easy Water Bike and complete a 2.5 km course on the water.

1.2 km Functional Fitness Circuit
Finish the race with a 1.2 km functional fitness circuit designed to test your strength and endurance.

Total race distance: 7.5 km

No swimming is required.

How does the race work?

Athletes will be given an allocated start time before race day.

You’ll complete the run, water bike and functional fitness circuit consecutively. Your time will continue through each section and transition, so your final result will be based on your total time from start to finish.

We’ll use in-house race timing to record each athlete’s result.

The athlete with the fastest overall finishing time wins.

Full course maps, transition instructions, start times and race-day information will be emailed to registered athletes closer to the event.

What does my $80 ticket include?

Your registration includes:

  • Entry into the full GEAR Multisport Triathlon
  • Use of a Go Easy Water Bike
  • Finisher medal
  • On-course hydration
  • On-course nutrition
  • Race-day support
  • Timing and official finishing result
  • Entry into the competition for the grand prize

What’s the prize?

The overall first-place finisher will receive $250 cash.

And, of course, everyone who completes the race earns their GEAR finisher medal.

What should I wear?

Wear the same kind of activewear you would normally wear for a run or gym workout.

We recommend:

  • Comfortable running shoes
  • Athletic shorts, leggings or similar
  • Breathable workout top
  • Light layer depending on the weather
  • Sunscreen if required

You’ll be using the same clothing throughout the race, including the water-bike section, so wear something you’re comfortable moving in.

You do not need swimming gear.

Do I need experience on a water bike?

No.

You don’t need any previous water-bike experience to take part.

Race-day instructions and a safety briefing will be provided before you begin the water-bike portion.

Do I need to bring anything?

We recommend bringing:

  • Running shoes
  • Comfortable activewear
  • Extra layer or change of clothes for after the race
  • Any personal nutrition you normally use when racing
  • Photo ID if required for check-in

Hydration and nutrition will also be available on course.

When should I arrive?

Your exact start time and required check-in time will be sent to you before race day.

Please arrive at the specified time so you have enough time to check in, receive your race briefing and get ready before your start.

We recommend not arriving right at your start time.

Where is the race?

Vanier Park, Vancouver

Exact check-in location, course maps, parking information and arrival instructions will be sent to athletes before race day.

What happens if the weather is bad?

GEAR is an outdoor event and will run in typical Vancouver weather conditions.

Because part of the race takes place on the water, unsafe wind or water conditions may require changes, delays or rescheduling.

Any important weather-related updates will be communicated directly to registered athletes.

Can I participate if I’m not an experienced racer?

Absolutely.

You don’t need to be a professional athlete or an experienced triathlete to enter. You should, however, be comfortable completing the distances involved and participating in a fitness circuit.

You can race for the podium or simply race against yourself.

Is this a traditional triathlon?

Not quite.

There’s no swimming and no traditional bike section.

GEAR replaces those with a water bike and functional fitness circuit, making it a very different kind of multisport race.

After you register

Once you’ve purchased your ticket, your spot is confirmed.

Closer to race day, you’ll receive an Athlete Information Email containing:

  • Your individual start time
  • Check-in time
  • Course maps
  • Race rules
  • Transition instructions
  • Water-bike information
  • Parking and arrival details
  • What to bring
  • Weather information
  • Any final race-day updates

All you need to do for now is register, train, and show up ready to race.
