Join us this Monday to celebrate 16 years of friendships, meditation and community. The gay/bi/trans mens mindfulness group first met at the Light Centre in Victoria in April 2009 before moving to our regular venue at the Quakers in 2010. The group started as a result of generosity. I did not have the £1600 needed to pay the first Quarter in advance, but my mother and stepfather and a friend loaned the funds needed and the group had a home. The first class had 15 men present and a year latter as we celebrated our first birthday there was a regular group of 30 at the class. Over the years since we continued to meet and thrive together even through the pandemic lock downs when we shifted to Zoom.
I started the group as I did not feel at ease on 'the scene' and wanted something that connected me to the 14 years of meditation training I had experienced in the Buddhist monastery and the communities I lived in in my 20s and 30s. I knew how powerful meditation had been in supporting my own well-being and wanted to share it with others.
Here's what a few of the men coming to the group have said:
✨ "I never thought a group of gay men meditating together would be something I need - but I was blown away by the experience. The sense of connection, the talking and connections we make before and in the break - it was so amazing I decided to attend regularly as it gave such an amazing start to the week." Phil Poole
✨ "Every Monday I take the journey into London for Nicks group. Nick creates a welcoming calm environment which results in friendly interaction in the group. I always feel more peaceful and connected to others afterwards and glad I came." John
✨ "I have been joining the Monday Mindfulness sessions for over three years. As soon as I walk through the door, the hustle and bustle is left behind and calmness envelopes me. I love the venue, so peaceful and welcoming. As well as the mindfulness and meditation practices lead by Nick each week, helping me to fall into the present and leave past and future concerns outside, there is a real sense of community and an amazing connection with others that sets me up for the week." Jim
If you're a current regular or you came to the class years ago but would like to reconnect it will be great to see you for cake, socialising and mindfulness and gratitude practices. A kind benefactor has paid for the cake, and someone else is making gifts to hand out on the night. So we look forward to seeing you there!
