-About this Event
Join us on November 4 from 6—9PM, for an interactive listening session at the Frost Art Museum. Building on the ideas of co-creation explored in Invitation to Openness, Akia Dorsainvil, DJ (Pressure Point) and founder of Masisi Radio; Andrea Queeley, FIU Associate Professor of Anthropology and African and African Diaspora Studies; Natalia Zuluaga, Frost Art Museum Chief Curator; and co-curator Graham Eng-Wilmot will gather around a selection of sounds to consider how avant-garde musicians have used collaboration and ideas drawn from science fiction to reimagine identity, community, and belonging. As Afrofuturist flautist Nicole Mitchell has described, group improvisation can generate “a kind of utopia in sound.” Together, we’ll listen, exchange ideas, and consider the potential of collective acts of making.
