About this Event
Discover the sound of Batala Portsmouth!
As part of the Portsmouth 100 celebrations, Batala Portsmouth is opening its doors to local residents for a special opportunity to experience the energy, rhythm and community of samba reggae.
Join members of Batala Portsmouth for a fun, welcoming workshop where you'll get a drum in your hands and learn some of the rhythms that make up our unmistakable sound.
No previous drumming or musical experience is needed. We'll introduce you to Batala, demonstrate the different drums that make up the band, and then teach you the basics in small groups with support from our experienced players.
We'll bring everyone back together at the end to put what you've learned into practice and experience what it's like to perform as one big samba reggae band!
Who can take part?
This free workshop is open to adults aged 18+ who live in Portsmouth. As a community project, priority may be given to residents of the Charles Dickens ward, where Batala Portsmouth is based.
All drums and equipment will be provided. Just bring yourself, comfortable clothing and plenty of enthusiasm!
Places are limited and advance booking is required.
