FORMING THE UNSEEN
A Three-Day Butoh Workshop
14–16 November 2026
10:30am – 5:30pm each day
Northern Rivers, NSW
⸻
About the Workshop
Forming the Unseen is a workshop to explore the body as a living field of sensation, impulse, and constant change. Where movement is not something we create, but something we come into relationship with.
Through Butoh sensibility and practice, we can decondition habitual patterns and let go of what we think we are, to become infinite and malleable in our art and expressions. We train to soften the idea of a separate self directing the body, and begin to sense how movement arises through us, around us, and between us.
Together we will explore how to move within the field without fixing it. How to stay with sensation as it shifts, and how to allow form to appear and dissolve.
Using subtle movement conditioning, meditative awareness, image work, and explorations into the subconscious body, we open space for new orientations to arise. With structure and guidance, we learn how to hold these experiences and give them form without forcing.
Butoh training asks us to listen.
To let the body be moved.
Through this, we allow what is living to speak.
⸻
Over three days of training we will explore:
* subtle body practice, training, and conditioning to loosen our grip on the daily body/mind
* Butoh-fu image work to explore new avenues for creative possibility
* research into the subconscious body and the creativity and intelligence already latent in the body
* somatic perception work to meet space, gravity, and environment as collaborators in our research
* Noguchi Taiso conditioning to soften the body and awaken fluidity of movement
* partner work with the focus of knowing one’s own body through the relationship and sensitivity to another
* co-body group creation training to find shared timing, rhizomic intelligence and peripheral listening
* the practice of witnessing and being witnessed
* shaping improvisation into simple compositions without force
⸻
Who is it for?
This workshop is for dancers, theatre-makers, movement practitioners, and anyone at all curious about exploring the body in new ways.
No experience in Butoh or dance is required, only a willingness to slow down, listen, and be moved.

Facilitators
Alexandra Wynne
Alexandra is a nomadic performance artist and movement facilitator from Australia, dedicated to exploring the depths of human experience through Butoh.
With a background in physical theatre and three years of study and facilitation at the Subbody Butoh School in Dharamshala, India, her work weaves together influences such as Noguchi Taiso, natural movement, embodied awareness, and practices that bridge body and mind.
Since 2011, she has travelled extensively throughout Asia, Europe, and other parts of the world, immersing herself in movement research, performance, teaching, and the curation of artistic gatherings. She has studied closely with Butoh masters in Japan and Europe, while continuing to share her work across diverse communities.
Her practice invites participants into deep presence and transformation, cultivating sensitivity to the body’s inner landscapes and the subtle, shifting layers of experience that move beneath the surface.
Ripley Waters
Ripley is a Butoh dancer and multidisciplinary artist currently based in Melbourne/ Naarm. With a life-long background in dance and a deep drive to explore truth through the body.
Her Butoh practice blends technique with intuitive inquiry, philosophy, and a focus on connection to the natural world and natural movement. She first encountered Butoh in India 9 years ago and has since trained and performed extensively across Europe, Japan, China and Australia.
Ripley’s approach to Butoh training is rooted in the body’s capacity for honesty and the search for honesty and inclusion in art- how to hold the grotesque, the ecstatic, and the subtle with equal attention. As a guide, she seeks to offer a space for movers to listen for what is true and emerging beneath the surface and to allow movement to be born from natural impulse and the mysterious forces within and without.
