What can a sound tell us? How does it move across bodies, places, and time, shaping resonances of identity in the present?
“Foot/Notes on Sound” invites us to reimagine sonic traces in Southeast Asia, exploring sound works and archives shaped by displacement, belonging, and transmission in the region. Amsterdam-based artist-scholar meLê yamomo will share insights on the sonus, body, and sound, tracing how histories continue to resonate even after sound itself has “died.” Drawing inspiration from dying Hakka folk songs, Singapore artist and composer weish explores how her musical practice engages migratory histories that continue to reshape identity in a post-migrant context.
This conversation is moderated by Curator Kathleen Ditzig and presented in conjunction with “Temple” by Tuan Andrew Nguyen, where unexploded ordnance from Quảng Trị, Vietnam, are transformed into instruments that reframe histories of trauma.

About the Speakers & Moderator
meLê yamomo is Assistant Professor of New Dramaturgies, Media Cultures, Artistic Research, and Decoloniality at the University of Amsterdam, and a member of the Amsterdam Young Academy. He is the project leader and principal investigator of the “Restituting, Reconnecting, and Reimagining Sound Heritage (Re:Sound) project”, the “EU-JPICH project Decolonizing Southeast Asian Archives” (DeCoSEAS), and the NWO Veni project »Sonic Entanglements«. Through his artistic and sonic labor in music-theatre, radio, podcasts, and performance, and as curator, yamomo invites us into a world where listening is resistance, where sound becomes a map to hidden pasts and possible futures. “Sometimes,” he says, “you only have to listen.”
weish is a multidisciplinary artist with a diverse range of work within the music, theatre and literary scenes. Both solo and with her bands.gif and sub:shaman, her compositions have taken her around the globe, from Sundance Film Festival to the Golden Melody Awards. She is playwright, composer and music director to “Secondary: The Musical”, performed original composition “Horizon” at the National Day Parade, toured Europe with grindcore stalwarts Wormrot, and presented live concept album “stray gods” at SIFA 2025. Her most recent research and performance explorations are inspired by the dying folk songs of her Hakka heritage.
Kathleen Ditzig is Curator at National Gallery Singapore. She received a PhD from Nanyang Technological University with a dissertation titled, “Exhibiting Southeast Asia in the Cultural Cold War: Geopolitics of Regional Art Exhibitions (1940s–1980s).” She obtained her MA from the Center for Curatorial Studies, Bard College. Inspired by her experience in cultural policy, Ditzig studies modern and contemporary Southeast Asian art in relation to global histories of capitalism, technology and international relations. As a curator and researcher, she is invested in advancing and interrogating art as an exceptional site and system of speaking to power. She won an IMPART Curatorial Award in 2021. Her writing has been published by “Southeast of Now” (NUS Press), “Journal of Social Issues in Southeast Asia” (NUS Press), “Afterall” (University of the Arts London), “post: Notes on art in a global context” (MoMA), “Art Agenda and Art Forum”, among others.
