About the Creator:

My name is Andrea Metcalf and I've been involved in the fitness industry since 1983. I started teaching Pilates about 30 years ago with a mat certification by "Balanced Body." As the fitness industry has become more mainstream, it has continued to grow. based on science and research.

Much of my career has been in the group fitness and personal training space but it's also been inspiring people through media. My background has been diverse. I have owned studios, worked in gyms, and created many businesses in the fitness/wellness space. I have had over a dozen appearances on the NBC Today Show, Steve Harvey, have written for the Huffingtonpost and Oprah.com and wrote a best-selling book, Naked Fitness, VanGuard Press, that created a program to help people lose weight and be pain-free.

When I am asked, "What is the best fitness program you can do,?", I have answered a program that feels good--something you enjoy. But over the years, the answer has changed. Many people love high-intensity interval training. I thought this was a great workout. At one point in my career, I dressed up in army fatigues, wore an army dog tag with my name on it around my neck, and grunted out the exercises to the group. Those early Boot Camp days were so much fun. In addition to Bootcamp classes, there was indoor cycling (spinning as many of you know it) And then there were water aerobics, stretch classes, yoga classes, strength classes, tai chi classes, and meditation classes too. And there is also Pilates.

In. teaching these different formats, I learned something from each one. But, what all of these have in common is movement. Each format takes a different approach to exercise, but understanding movement and the elements of a great class is integral to becoming a great instructor. I have loved Pilates from day one and am happy to see it's finally at the top of exercise regimens for many people. it is the best conscious movement format that offers results, low impact on the body, and helps one feel great without the pain of pounding of HIIT-style workouts.

Maybe it's time to start thinking about fitness as activities that our bodies and our minds need. Pilates incorporates stretching, breathing, sweat, sculpting, balancing, and strengthening moves that feel good. It is a physical, mental, and spiritual form of exercise.

I am currently an owner of Heat 3.0 Pilates Studio, The Pilates Experience Studio and FLX Stretch Training. All businesses that incorporate the elements of Pilates in training and insights.

In this course, I hope to share with you my passion for movement. I hope to help you understand how to analyze movement, create classes that help people get stronger, improve their balance, and give them what they need to look, live, and feel their best. And I hope to help you become a great Pilates Reformer teacher.
