María José Leon Soto
==============
Dancer, choreographer and teacher María José began performing professionally at the age of 17 in Jerez de la Frontera. After a long career as a performer she now specialises in teaching and choreography, leading courses and seminars across Europe. As a dancer and as a teacher, her desire is to transmit the love and respect she feels for baile flamenco.
She says, "It [Flamenco] is not a 'difficult' dance (it was born as a popular, improvised expression, so it does not require talent or particular physicality), but it is complex: many elements must mesh simultaneously, you have to keep a rhythm with your feet and a different one with your hands. It takes commitment, but it rewards you generously: it manages to bring out a strength in you that you did not even suspect you had."
Companies:
María José has been part of various companies, sharing the stage with figures such as Joaquín Cortés, Joaquín Ruiz, Antonio and Manuel Reyes, and performing in the most important theatres across Spain and Italy.
Hometown:
Jerez de la Frontera, Spain
Training:
María José completed her training in Seville and Madrid with numerous teachers: Matilde Coral, Manolo Marín, Ciro, María Magdalena, Manolete, Merche Esmeralda, Pedro Azorín, Carmen Cortés, Javier Barón, Javier Latorre, and Raul El Camborio.
In 1991 she obtained the title of Spanish Dance from the Royal Conservatory of Madrid, currently approved as a Superior Grade in the specialty of Choreography. Passionate about teaching, she tirelessly continues her training, participating in numerous advanced courses including other disciplines such as contemporary dance, the Pilates method, oriental dance, which enrich her vision of dance and its forms of transmission.
Projects:
María José has collaborated on many social projects, working with people with disabilities, bringing Flamenco to schools and high schools, holding workshops in the women's prison of Verona and participating in the "Rom" project in a nomadic settlement of nomads from the East.
She carries out important educational work in Italy, where she holds seminars in many cities, being a point of reference for amateurs and professionals. She has led courses at the International Festival of Jerez and collaborated with teachers such as teachers such as Isabel Bayón, Rafael Campallo, and Javier Barón.
