About this Event
How do you move a film from an idea on the page to something that can actually be made?
Finding Funding brings together filmmakers and funders to unpack some of the questions every emerging independent filmmaker eventually has to face: why funding matters, where to look for it, how to make an application stand out, and how financial support can help create space for more ambitious and diverse storytelling.
Joining the discussion is Christian Parton, founder of Genera Films, a funding platform established to support short filmmakers with grants while allowing filmmakers to retain creative control. Parton has previously spoken publicly about what Genera looks for in applications, with story quality sitting at the heart of its decision-making process.
He will be joined by Mustapha Wehbi, Head of Short Form at Slick Films. Through the Slick Films Fund, Wehbi has been involved in supporting emerging filmmakers and identifying projects with the potential to develop new talent and advance filmmakers’ careers.
The conversation will be moderated by London-based producer Chris Lau, a BFI NETWORK South East Emerging Producers Lab alumnus whose work spans short and feature filmmaking. His projects have screened at BIFA-qualifying and international festivals, and he is currently producing both fiction and documentary features. Chris Lau — London-based film producer
Alongside practical guidance on finding and approaching funding opportunities, the panel will examine what makes a winning submission: from the strength of the story and clarity of the creative vision to budgets, pitches and the way filmmakers communicate why their project needs to exist.
Designed for emerging filmmakers at any stage of development, this session offers an opportunity to hear directly from people who assess, support and pursue funding, and to better understand how to give your next application the strongest possible chance.
