Join JIUN Collective for a series of short films celebrating East and Southeast Asian (ESEA) Heritage Month followed by an ESEA-themed Veggie Pot Luck.
The film programme will explore stories through the lens of East and Southeast Asian artists. Including themes of migration, intergenerational relationships and globalisation. Following the screening, audiences are invited to share food.
Bring a dish if you can; rice and tea will be provided. Whether you join for the whole afternoon or just part of the event, everyone is welcome.
About JIUN Collective
JIUN Collective is a multidisciplinary art collective formed of three sisters, Kharis Wong, Verity Wong and Stephanie Wong. Their work centres on ideas of memory, home and place informed by their history of migration and cross cultural identities. Together they use art as a way to connect, working across a range of mediums including printmaking, ceramics, photography, film and installation.

The film documents a series of conversations with the artist’s grandmothers. The conversations center around migration and intergenerational female relationships. Conversations with our Grandmothers explores questions of the past, present and future, ideas of home, and distance and closeness born from histories of migration.
Parallel

Parallel is a short film that explores how we use language – verbal and non-verbal – to define ourselves and strive for a sense of belonging with those around us. The film follows a family as they partake in a weekly ritual of going to their local Chinese restaurant for dim sum. With a focus on the relationship between a young, British Chinese woman and her Chinese po po (grandmother), the film observes the struggles and feelings of uncertainty that can arise from feeling distanced from one’s origins but highlights the way moments of humour and affection can also arise from such misalignments.
Chiyo

Chiyo is a poetic exploration of the Japanese suburbs through the artist's reflection on the life of her grandmother. With a series of everyday moments in Yashio, from a summer fair to Buddhist rituals, the film meditates on family, intimacy and ageing.
Data Brothers, Sun Lamp and Ethnic Minorities behind Landscape

Data Brothers, Sun Lamp and Ethnic Minorities Behind Landscape attends to the energy infrastructures embedded in rural life and the landscapes of ethnic minorities shaped between network and reality in southwest China. Unfolding through a hybrid spacetime, the film moves from informal electronics markets to rural villages of ethnic minorities. These seemingly unrelated scenes are connected through infrastructure, revealing hidden links between ethnic minorities, livestreaming, and clean energy. Illuminated by solar lamps, the mountain village drifts quietly along the margins of globalization. As we project our imaginaries of locals and ethnic minorities, they also watch the world through the glow of phone screens. The film draws on visual ethnography while also emerging as a travelogue of artist’s return to their hometown as visitor.
