Abstract:
This workshop will provide a review of the ethics principles related to topics of spirituality that may arise in the counseling room and counseling modalities that rely on spiritual conversations and topics as well. This topics will be discussed with application to counseling practice, focusing on an empowerment model of care. The workshop will focus on the established standards regarding spirituality and will reference both the CSWE Code of Ethics and the NBCC Code of Ethics on this topic area.

9:10-9:20am Explore examples of client-centered assessment and intervention strategies (20 min)
9:20-9:30am Discuss evidence-based counseling practices related to spiritually integrated clinical care (20 min)

Learning Objectives:
- Participants will identify ethical principles related to self-determination, professional competence, and cultural competence when addressing clients’ spiritual and religious beliefs in clinical practice.
- Participants will describe appropriate approaches for conducting brief and comprehensive spiritual assessments while respecting client autonomy, worldview, and readiness to explore spiritual concerns.
- Participants will analyze potential ethical risks associated with spiritually integrated practice, including value imposition, spiritual reductionism, overemphasis on spirituality, and practicing beyond professional competence.
- Participants will apply client-centered strategies for integrating spirituality into clinical interventions while maintaining appropriate boundaries, supporting self-determination, and utilizing clergy or other spiritual resources when appropriate.

Presenter:
Kim Cook, MSW, MA, LCSW, has clinical and administrative background in outpatient mental health, primarily in faith-based agencies. She is the Clinical Director of Elu: Counseling, Consulting, and Coaching and she is an adjunct faculty member at Covenant College and Dordt University. She does consulting work with non-profits and has a certificate in Non-Profit Leadership and has been a member of the American College of Healthcare Executives. She offers leadership coaching especially to those in non-profit organizations. In counseling, Kim works with families, couples, individuals, and groups on a variety of issues, including relationships, mental health, spiritual growth, behavioral problems, trauma, parenting, adoption/foster care, and crisis response. She works with children of all ages and is trained in play therapy. She also has extensive experience working with teens, adults, and specific training for working with clergy. Kim is trained in CISM and does critical incident debriefings and organizational crisis support. Kim maintains her LCSW licensure in Georgia, Iowa, Maryland, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, and Virginia and in South Carolina and Florida carries a telehealth license.

Getting my certificate: In order to receive a certificate, registrants must attend the entire session. Course completion requirements include participating in the full session and completing the CE evaluation. Participants attendance will be tracked by our virtual meeting host (someone from admin team). Any questions or difficulties logging in on the event day should be sent to [email protected]. 3. The response decision is made by the CE Advisory Committee in consultation with the CE Director. The decision considers various perspectives on the situation and relevant facts.
4. Information from the findings is shared with Elu’s leadership team for use to improve future courses.
5. Elu will respond to the participant in writing regarding the outcome of the response decision.
