MUSE Winston-Salem’s Downtown Architectural Walking Tour will start and end at MUSE Winston-Salem, located in a newly renovated building at 226 South Liberty Street. Over the course of two-hour walk visitors will learn about the history and design of many of the urban core’s signature structures and public spaces. Following a stop at Shamrock Mills (today’s Sawtooth School for Visual Arts), the tour will head east along the Fourth Street commercial corridor, filled with distinguished early 20th-century buildings.Highlights will include the Art Deco Loewy Building, the former Carolina Theatre and Hotel (today’s Roger L. Stevens Center), Merschel Park, and a trio of early “skyscrapers”: the Nissen, O’Hanlon, and Pepper buildings. After a visit to the dazzling lobby of the iconic 1929 R. J. Reynolds Building, the tour will head south on Main Street, which boasts fine examples of International Style, Brutalist, and Postmodern architecture.
The tour was developed, and will be led, by museum volunteer Bob Blythe. Blythe is a historian and recent Winston-Salem transplant, retired from a career with the National Park Service and formerly leader of tours in Chicago, perhaps the country’s premier architectural city.
The tour will follow a relatively even path of sidewalks with modest elevation changes across a partially shaded route. The tour will take place rain or shine (with exceptions for extreme weather) and participants are encouraged to carry water. Audio headsets will be provided.
Tickets for the Downtown Winston-Salem Architectural Walking Tour are $30 each and can be purchased at musews.org/events. Ticketholders will receive a souvenir water bottle to take on the tour, along with refreshments at tour’s end. Ticketholders are also invited to return to The Katharine Brasserie & Bar at the historic R.J. Reynolds Building. By presenting a tour receipt, diners will receive a 20% discount (excluding alcohol).
Registrants will be required to sign a liability waiver prior to the event.
