Program:
Japanese traditional dance, Yukata fashion show, Kagura, and the Big Three Bon Odori Festivals
About this Event
Japan Performing Arts, Inc.’s Autumn Free Public Program features “Discovery within Traditions – Ebisu / Big Three Bon Odori. Across Japan, there is a Shinto ritual dance known as Kagura, which has spread to various regions. From the Kagura tradition, we will present Ebisu—a dance dedicated to the god of the sea—performed as an offering in the Iwami region of Shimane Prefecture.
There is also a Buddhist dance called Bon Odori. These dances play a central role in important local festivals. For Bon Odori, we will feature Japan’s three major Bon dances: Nishimonai Bon Odori (UNESCO Intangible World Heritage) from Akita Prefecture, Gujo Odori (UNESCO Intangible World Heritage) from Gifu Prefecture, and Awa Odori from Tokushima Prefecture. Since Bon Odori is a participatory dance, we highly encourage everyone to join in!
We will be hosting workshops on September 27, October 11, October 25, and November 7. If you are interested, please scan this QR code.
Additionally, we will introduce five types of Yukata (casual summer kimonos) traditionally worn by Japanese people during festivals! Each of these yukatas features unique weaving and dyeing techniques, such as Shijira-ori, Chusen, Chikusen, and Arimatsu Shibori. The program will showcase these varieties, and JPA models will wear and present them to the audience.
Furthermore, the program will feature a performance of Nihon Buyo (traditional Japanese dance), which is one of JPA's core activities. Notably, this performance will showcase choreography that blends traditional Japanese dance with modern dance elements.
This program is supported by New York City Cultural Affairs & New York State Council on the Arts.
