Marie Harrison (1948–2019) spent her life demanding the basic services her community was too often denied: clean water, safe energy, and fair employment in a neighborhood where opportunity had become a dream deferred. Molanphy traces her story with unflinching detail - the brown water that ran from the taps at Geneva Towers, the blood that ran from her grandson's nose while the family lived in the shadow of PG&E's smokestacks, and the constant fear of radiation exposure near one of the nation's most notorious Superfund sites. Through Harrison's story, Marie's Tree illuminates an injustice that continues to play out in communities across the country.

About the Speaker
Tom Molanphy's journalism has appeared in 48 Hills, USA Today, Travel.com, The Frisc, Earth Island Journal, and the San Francisco Chronicle. His work as a 2022 USC Annenberg Center for Health Journalism Data Fellow led to a 2023 1st Place Award in Environmental Reporting from the California News Publishers Association. His latest book, "Marie’s Tree: Implosions and Injustice in San Francisco," will be published by Green Writers Press in the Fall of 2026. He is a member of the Society of Environmental Journalists and teaches journalism, creative writing and composition at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco.
