In December of 1898, the only successful coup de'tat in American history was launched. The last biracial government in the South was overthrown by an armed insurrection, followed by a horrific deluge of violence and M**der. Wilmington, a city once known as a peaceful and forward-thinking community, was subjugated by white supremacist terror.
The Coup of 1898 was a long-buried part of North Carolina history that is re-emerging in public consciousness, but few are aware of the details. This tour seeks to educate the public with a detailed, thorough, and candid exploration of the events, trends, and people involved. Hear the stories of a newsman who narrowly avoided his own horrific M**der, the professional instigator who riled up prejudice, the black residents of Wilmington who valiantly protected their homes and families, the economic underpinnings behind the assault, and so much more.
