About this Event
From its very beginnings, the blues has stood alongside those whom mainstream society has refused to truly see. It emerged from poverty, racial oppression, lives shaped by movement, bodies worn by labour, and desires that could find no place in the language of respectability. In times when people were not permitted to “speak”, they carved out spaces for themselves through sound and the body. Ma Rainey, Bessie Smith, Gladys Bentley… Loves that could not be openly acknowledged, bodies that did not conform to gender norms, people who refused to submit to the expectations of marriage, family and respectability, all have found reflections of themselves in the blues.
Ma Rainey、Bessie Smith、Gladys Bentley…
What the blues preserves is never just a musical form or a vocabulary of movement. It also reminds us that we do not have to make ourselves neat, whole, or easily understood to earn the right to express ourselves. Our bodies are no different. Blues dance does not make the body uniform; it allows contradictions to emerge. The body can move closer on one beat while holding its differences within. It allows softness, and it allows us to remain sharp. If the body has only one centre, we can speak only one sentence. But if the body has many centres, we can speak many sentences at once. Each has its own tone, each holds its own sense of time, and yet, in certain moments, they hear one another. The body can respond while continuing to ask questions. Our bodies hold different desires, memories and hesitations. Every joint can become the beginning of a sentence. Every separation need not mean isolation; even within complexity, new connections can be made.
In this blues dance workshop, we will take the body apart and return it to its original complexity, just as we are never linear beings.
