About this Event
Cross-cultural communication in the classroom
"Just write it down now please!” Is this rude or polite? If someone interrupts you, does this mean they’re not listening to what you’re saying? Our answers largely depend on our own culture or languages.
This workshop invites you into a practical exploration of how people from different cultural backgrounds communicate. We’ll aim to bring communication to life through real‑world examples, lively discussions, and interactive activities that reveal why misunderstandings happen—and how easily they can be avoided.
We'll look at how cultural differences in terms of directness, tone, hierarchy, and non‑verbal cues shape classroom interactions, then experiment with strategies that make communication in multicultural classrooms clearer and more effective.
Learning outcomes:
- Understand how different cultures convey politeness in speech
- Analyse how politeness can be misinterpreted
- Consider strategies for minimising intercultural misunderstanding and conflict in the classroom.
