Panel Discussion and Reception

Creative Philadelphia Art Gallery, Room 116

In conjunction with the exhibition, “A Federal Job in the Arts: CETA and Philadelphia in the 1970s,” this panel will consider the history of how artists worked under the Comprehensive Employment and Training Act; assess the current state of funding for the arts and the challenges involved; and imagine alternative approaches for employing artists in the future.

About the Exhibition

Panelists:

• Anne Edmunds, Director of Brandywine Workshop’s CETA-funded Visual Artists in Public Service (VAPS) program, 1977-80

• Valerie Gay, Chief Cultural Officer, and Executive Director of Creative Philadelphia

• Isaiah Thomas, City Council Member at Large and Majority Whip; advocate for the arts

Moderator:

• Virginia Maksymowicz, former CETA artist, co-coordinator of the CETA Arts Legacy Project, and co-curator of “A Federal Job in the Arts” exhibition.
