Continence Assessment for Registered Nurses
This specialist course is designed for Registered Nurses who are involved in assessing, managing, and supporting adults experiencing bladder and bowel dysfunction. Delivered by Jersey's only specialist Bladder and Bowel Nurse, the course provides the knowledge and practical skills required to undertake comprehensive continence assessments and develop effective, person-centred care plans.
Bladder and bowel problems can significantly impact an individual's health, dignity, independence, and quality of life. This course will enhance nurses' understanding of continence assessment and management, enabling them to deliver evidence-based care and improve outcomes for patients.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Understand the definitions, causes, and impact of urinary and bowel dysfunction.
- Undertake a comprehensive assessment of bladder and bowel function.
- Recognise the role of pharmacology and prescribing in the management of bladder and bowel conditions.
- Apply infection prevention and control principles when carrying out continence assessments and bowel management procedures.
- Understand the use of continence products and other continence devices to support patient care.
- Access and provide information regarding the provision of continence products.
- Develop person-centred care plans that promote dignity, independence, and quality of life.
