About this Event
Learn how to transform your yard into a beautiful landscape that can capture rain, reduce stormwater runoff, support wildlife, and protect local waterways. This hands-on workshop introduces the principles of conservation landscaping and demonstrates how native plants, healthy soils, and thoughtful landscape design can work together to help manage rain where it falls. This workshop will explore how conservation landscaping fits into broader stormwater management strategies and how simple changes to your landscape can capture rainwater, reduce stormwater runoff, and create healthier, more resilient outdoor spaces.
During the workshop, participants will:
- Learn what conservation landscaping is and how it differs from conventional landscaping.
- Discover how native plants, soil improvement, and landscape design can help slow and spread rainwater, helping it to soak into the ground to prevent polluted runoff.
- Understand how conservation landscaping reduces stormwater runoff, improves local water quality, and supports wildlife.
- Learn the basics of site assessment, including drainage patterns, soil and light conditions, and existing vegetation.
- Explore strategies for selecting native plants and designing planting areas that work with the natural flow of water.
- See real-world examples of conservation landscaping and green infrastructure, with opportunities to ask questions about your own property and landscape goals.
The workshop is open to Baltimore City residents only.
Whether you're a homeowner, community leader, gardener, or simply "rain curious," you'll leave with practical knowledge, design ideas, and actionable next steps to create a landscape that is both beautiful and better for Baltimore's environment.
