About the film: Seventeen-year-old Robert dreams of becoming a rapper in Bangui, the capital of the Central African Republic. But his parents, who once fled the Democratic Republic of the Congo, are in prison. As the eldest son, Robert is left to care for his four younger siblings on his own. Juggling odd jobs with studying for his high school diploma, he also has to steer clear of the militias causing unrest in the city. One day, he hears about a music competition, and winning first prize becomes his greatest hope.With the captivating musical drama CONGO BOY, director Rafiki Fariala brings his own life story to the screen. In his feature debut, cast largely with non-professional actors, he offers a sensitive yet entertaining glimpse into life in his neighbourhood in Bangui.
