About this Event
Across the UK, architects are being asked to upgrade, adapt and reimagine once ordinary buildings that now carry historic or cultural significance. These buildings must work harder today thermally, socially and functionally.
Every adaptive reuse project presents the same conundrum: how much we preserve versus how much we change. How might we upgrade performance without compromising character?
During this event, we will explore how to retrofit buildings that matter without erasing the historic, cultural or emotional context that makes them valuable. The morning will offer practical insights, design intelligence and you will benefit from real-world insight from architects who have successfully navigated the tension between conservation and reinvention.
Speakers include:
- Carol Metstead, project architect, van Heyningen & Haward Architects, who will join us to deliver a case study presentation on Houlton School, a multi award-winning retrofit that restores and repurposes historic buildings.
- Vicky Thornton, project director of Allies and Morrison, who will join us to deliver a case study presentation on Hub by Premier Inn, Shoreditch, a building which has an interesting history of different functions, and is now converted to a hub by Premier Inn.
- Lorraine Stoutt Griffith, director at Twelve Architects who will join us to deliver a case study on Bodmin J*il Hotel, originally an 18th century Pr*son, the J*il has been restored to provide 70 boutique rooms that combine the historial architecture with contemporary design, retaining 85% of the original fabric.
- Tom Wells, associate, AHMM will deliver a case study on New Scotland Yard
This webinar will be chaired by Chris Foges, contributing editor of RIBAJ.
